Summer, my thirties, the pears I canned last year…so many cool things on the verge of being gone forever.
Stupid finite human reality. I hate it.
Now I have regrets…like I should have blogged during August (I’m a slacker). Should’ve made more of myself during the decade of my thirties. I should have savored those pears a little more (especially because I didn’t can any this year).
But when ISN’T an end near? The end of something, anyway.
I know that’s life and all, but when I have to say goodbye to summer, I never want to. And maybe I wasn’t writing like I should have been, but I did lots of cool stuff…
- Went to writer camp at the Rainier Writing Workshop (as part of my MFA program) with some of the coolest people in the universe.
- Went to a fair and also to a carnival.
- Hung out with my favorite girl and we hiked, explored several beaches, and picked berries.
Oh, and also I made pickles and saw a newt.
I mean, I did other stuff, too, but enough pics–don’t you hate it when people make you look at their photo albums!?
The great thing about an end of something, is that it’s usually the beginning of something else.
For example, today is the very last day of August, BUT tomorrow is the first day of September and that’s the day I’ll get on a plane and fly to Vermont where I’ll begin a real artists residency (in writing) at the Vermont Studio Center. That’s a pretty rad beginning.
I’m excited to start new stuff, even while I’m grieving certain lost things. Like how I won’t be able to be there on my daughter’s first day of school–an event I’ve never missed.
That’s how it is, I guess, you get things, and you give things up. Stupid.
I want everything.
Tom James-
I would have to say that at this milepost on your one-lane blacktop of life, you have quite an achievement to be held up as a guiding beacon for your next decade. That would be the shining star named Olivia. I’m sure she will graciously forgive your absence this one time.
meagan mac-
Thanks, Tom, for helping to assuage my guilt. Hope life is going well for you, too, on the ol’ “one-lane blacktop.”

How exciting Meagan! You so wow me, with each cool thing you do. Vermont is one of my favorite places (yes, the whole state) and I’m sure you will love it too! Are you going for a month? Or more? All the best and I hope you’ll post while you’re there…
Your 40s may surprise you. 😉
meagan mac-
OMG, Dawn, are you kidding me! You’re like the Queen of Cool! Especially when it comes to going places. Unfortunately, I can only be away from home (and my family) for two weeks, but I’m going to make the very best of it. And yes, I’ll do my best to post while I’m there. How’s your writing going?
talesfromthemotherland-
My writing, other than the blog, has been back burnered for the summer, while I melt down. Working on getting back into a groove in the fall. Got the manuscript back from the editor in Chicago, with lots of encouragement and good feedback, lots of little things to clean up (though she said it was the “cleanest manuscript she’s read. smile). As for Queens and cool, I am quite certain that you wear tht crown Meagan. I travel, yes, but you rock the writing scene and I feel pretty lame in that dept these days. I’m so excited for you. Make the most of your 2 weeks and enjoy! Beautiful place is sure to provide lots of inspiration. 🙂

Thanks for sharing–photo albums can be great when they involve shared nostalgia. I love to see all those people I’m missing so much, and you and your beautiful daughter–oh, and the newt. Very much my speed, that newt (we have a dessicated salamander hanging around the cabin. I don’t know where Phil found it).
Share and share about Vermont, please, and have a wonderful time there!
love
Ela

Hi Ela!! It’s so good to hear from you. How are you? Yes, Newts are so cool. And yes, I miss everyone very much. That pic of you and Sydney is the sweetest. What lovely ladies you both are.
Impower You-
Your summer sounds like a blast! Of course you don;t want it to end! Have you thought of canning some yummy fall apples?
meagan mac-
Yeah, I should have canned the apples. All I did was make some applesauce. I froze a bit of it, though. I’m hoping when I get back from this writing residency I’m doing that I can still make some cider. We have a little grinder and press.
Impower You-
That’s something to look forward to.

I canned a bunch of pickles this year. I also canned some jalapenos that turned out really well. I am almost ready for the end Apocalypse. I would like some of that cider first though…
meagan mac-
How’d your pickles turn out? I just opened a jar of mine last week and I’m very pleased–they’re good and hot (I like spicy pickles). I bet those jalapenos are fantastic.
And I would like to confirm that I DID make cider upon my return. Well, not just ME…my whole family participated and luckily we didn’t have the hornet problem during the process that we had last year. Anyway, now I have both frozen and canned cider. Next year I’ll do more, since the canning process seems to have worked out well and didn’t alter the flavor as much as I’d thought it would. No hard cider this year, though.
Good luck making it through the Apocalypse. Our pantries should come in handy…unless we’re all flesh-eating zombies, in which case it will have been a big fat waste of time.
